One of the best things about rainbow fruit kabobs is how flexible they are! You can easily swap fruit based on what’s in season, on sale, or already in your fridge.

Easy Fruit Swaps

  • Instead of blueberries: Try blackberries for a deeper purple tone.
  • Instead of red grapes: Use raspberries or watermelon cubes.
  • Instead of green grapes: Honeydew melon works beautifully.
  • Instead of kiwi: Green apple slices (brush with lemon juice to prevent browning).
  • Instead of pineapple: Mango chunks add a sweet tropical flavor.
  • Instead of clementines: Mandarin oranges or peach slices.
  • Instead of strawberries: Red apple chunks or cherries (pitted).

Want a Healthier Version?

If you’d prefer to skip the marshmallows, try:

  • Banana slices
  • Extra pineapple
  • Yogurt-covered raisins (add just before serving)

These fruit skewers are naturally:

  • Gluten-free
  • Dairy-free
  • Nut-free

Which makes them perfect for classroom parties and group events.

You can also turn this into a rainbow fruit tray instead of kabobs if serving younger kids or toddlers.

If you’re making rainbow fruit kabobs for a party or event, a little prep goes a long way in keeping everything fresh and vibrant.

1. Prep Fruit the Same Day (Best Option)

For the freshest appearance, wash and cut fruit the day you plan to serve.

2. Prevent Browning

If using apples or bananas:

  • Lightly brush with lemon or pineapple juice.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

3. Wait to Add Marshmallows

Add marshmallows just before serving so they don’t become sticky, hard, or soggy from moisture in the fruit.

4. Store Properly

  • Place assembled kabobs in a single layer in an airtight container.
  • Line the bottom with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture.
  • Refrigerate up to 24 hours.

5. Keep Them Cool for Parties

If serving outdoors in spring or summer, place the platter over a tray of ice to keep fruit fresh longer.

Rainbow Fruit Kabobs (Healthy & Fun for Kids!) naturally colorful fruit snack idea that doubles as a festive St. Patrick’s Day treat.

Can I make rainbow fruit kabobs the night before?

Yes! You can assemble them up to 24 hours ahead of time. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and wait to add marshmallows until just before serving.

What fruit works best for fruit kabobs?

Firm fruits that hold their shape work best, such as grapes, pineapple, strawberries, kiwi, melon, and blueberries. Softer fruits can slide or break apart.

Can I use metal skewers instead of bamboo?

Yes, reusable metal skewers work great for home use. For parties or classroom events, bamboo skewers are usually easier and more convenient.
