How Do I Make a Bookmark Craft?
You can make a traditional corner bookmark craft that is folded origami style or use the bookmark corner template that’s included in the pdf download. Instead of folding, the bookmark template only needs two simple folds, and then tape–making it foolproof. This helps younger children complete the craft independently, since making origami folds can be a bit tricky for younger kids, and makes it possible to make the same craft with a wide range of children, including younger and older kids.
If you wish, here is a great video tutorial by Red Ted Art, to make the traditional origami style folded bookmark, then use the Thing 1 and Thing 2 template that’s available below, to decorate it.
When is the Best Time to Make a Dr. Seuss Craft?
Anytime really! You could make this craft for Dr. Seuss Day which is March 2nd, on Dr. Seuss’s ( Theodor Seuss Geisel) birthday and also happens to be Read Across America Day.
You could also make it with your preschoolers or kindergartners any time you need a book-inspired activity, because this bookmark kids craft, is all about inspiring a love of reading with Dr. Seuss.
Who are Thing 1 and Thing 2?
You can find Thing 1 and Thing 2 characters in The Cat in the Hat Book. They are twins with a lot of energy and a bit of a mischievous side… but don’t worry, they don’t bite, lol.

About the Free Printable Template
The template comes with two options:
- A Single Print Craft Template that should be printed out on white paper, then the pieces cut out, and traced onto colored paper.
- The Classroom Set Template let’s you print multiple of the same craft piece directly onto colored craft paper. This eliminates the need to trace the template (saving time) and is much easier for those who are crafting with more than one child like at school, the library, or in a homeschool co-op.
- It also includes an “easy fold” corner bookmark template to make crafting easy for all kids (and adults).

- White paper (I like using white cardstock for crafts because it is thick and strong paper)
- Red and Blue craft paper (I LOVE this multi pack of paper… it makes the best crafts!)
- Glue
- Black Felt Tip Pen (a black sharpie would work)
- Scissors
- Tape
- Optional: Pencil – to trace the template
Directions:
For your convenience, printable directions are available at the end of this post.
Step 1: Prepare the Template
Single Craft Template: Print the template out on white paper, cut the template pieces out, and use your pencil to trace the body template on red paper and the hair template on blue paper.
or
Classroom Set Template: Print the template pages out, and then cut out the template pieces by following the straight guidelines.
- Face and Circle is printed on white paper
- Body is printed on red paper
- Hair is printed on blue paper
Step 2: Cut out the Pieces
Have your children cut out the craft pieces. This takes fine motor skills and some children may need assistance. The rectangles are fairly easy to cut but the hair requires scalloped edges.
Tip: Show children how to hold their scissors in one hand, and use their other hand to control the movement of the paper as they cut.
Step 3: Make the Bookmark Corner
Cut out the “easy fold” corner bookmark template.
Fold along the dashed lines to make the corner.
Tape the two edges together to make the corner pocket. If you have extra tape, fold it under along the inside of the bookmark or cut it off.
or
Fold an origami style bookmark. We have not made that style, but there are plenty of tutorials on line using a 16 cm X 16 cm piece of origami paper.
Step 4: Decorate the Bookmark
Turn the bookmark over so the folded corner pocket is touching the table. Put the folded corner at the top.
Glue the blue hair towards the top corner.
Glue the red body onto the craft.
Glue the white face and white circle onto the craft.
Use the pen to draw a face and decorate Thing 1 and Thing 2’s shirt.
Once the glue has dried, your Thing 1 and Thing 2 bookmark is ready to enjoy holding your spot in your current read. Repeat if you want to make a pair since twins come in 2s.
