Not Making a Pipe Cleaner Bubble Wand

Many people use pipe cleaners to make bubble wands by bending the wire at the top to form a shape, and creating a handle. Today, we chose not to use pipe cleaners to give our bubble wands more durability so it’s easier for my little preschooler (Little Pup, age 3) to use because it won’t bend out of shape. This will be helpful for toddlers to use too.

Bubble Science: What Shape Will Your Bubble Be?

Since your perler bead bubble wands can be made into any shape you can add a bit of science exploration to bubble wand making and bubble blowing. Challenge kids to learn more about bubbles and the science behind their structure and shape. Can they make a square shaped bubble with a square shaped bubble wand? That would be so cool…but is it possible?

Add a drop of food coloring or liquid water color to give bubbles a touch of color when they are popped onto a piece of white paper. You would even make a bubble wand that matches each color of the rainbow.

Snow Bubbles

If it is cold enough outside, try blowing bubbles in the snow. You can make a bubble tower and even a frozen bubble if it is cold enough.

Place the perler beads in a pattern on the perler bead base. We liked to do two rows of beads for extra durability. Leave a hole in the middle to blow bubbles through. Since you are designing your own bubble wand, you can make it any shape you want, like a traditional circle, or cute star, or heart… it’s up to you. Get CREATIVE and have FUN!

Once your pattern is completed, cover the top with parchment paper. (If you are using wax paper, place the waxy side down onto the perler beads.) Place the iron on top of the paper and move it slowly to melt the beads together (adult only). You don’t want your bubble blower to fall apart, so make sure to check and see that the beads have fused together.

DIY Bubble Wand: Iron Perler Beads

Carefully remove the parchment paper from the back of the bubble wand.

To make the handle of your bubble wand, use the glue gun to add a dab of glue to the bottom of your bubble wand. Now place a popsicle stick onto the glue and press down firmly.
