Whether you’re studying ocean habitats, planning a summer activity, or looking for an engaging craft for an ocean unit, this printable coral reef diorama is a fun way to explore the underwater world.
This printable coral reef diorama includes:
- Coral reef background
- Sandy ocean floor
- Coral pieces
- Seaweed
- Shells
- Octopus
- Puffer fish

- Clownfish
- Angelfish
- Sea turtle
Children can color the pieces however they like before assembling their own unique reef scene.
My family has always loved ocean animals. Whenever we’re at the doctor’s office and spot fish swimming around the aquarium, my kids are quick to point out Nemo and Dory, except they usually insist on calling them by their real names, clownfish and blue tang since we are fish people… we once had 10 running fish tanks in our house!
That’s one reason we enjoy ocean-themed activities so much. They’re a fun way to learn about the amazing creatures that live beneath the waves while encouraging creativity and imaginative play.
Whether your child fills their reef with sea turtles, seahorses, clownfish, or colorful coral, this diorama is a fun way to bring a little piece of the ocean home.
Tips for Younger Kids
- Pre-cut smaller pieces for preschoolers or let them bubble cut around the animals.
- Use thicker cardstock for a sturdier diorama.
- Encourage children to talk about where each animal might live within the reef.
- Allow kids to choose their favorite colors and decorations to make the project unique.
Extend the Learning
Keep the ocean fun going with these ideas:
- Learn about coral reefs and why they are important habitats.
- Create an ocean sensory bin with shells and toy sea animals.
- Sort ocean animals by size, color, or habitat.
- Watch a kid-friendly video about coral reefs.
- Build additional sea creatures using playdough.

Book Recommendation
One of my favorite books to pair with this coral reef diorama is Over and Under the Coral Reef. My kids and I loved exploring the reef through the pages of this beautiful book while learning about the animals that live there.
As we read, we discovered colorful fish, sea turtles, coral, and other fascinating sea creatures hiding beneath the ocean’s surface. The illustrations are absolutely stunning and helped spark ideas for decorating our own underwater scenes. My kids especially enjoyed spotting animals from the story and adding them to their dioramas afterward.
I think this book is a perfect companion to this craft because it helps children see a coral reef as a living habitat filled with amazing creatures, not just a collection of fish. Find out more about this book here. (There is also a matching Over and Under Ocean Book too!)
