Materials

  • Coral Reef Diorama Printable
  • Printer paper or cardstock
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or school glue
  • Optional: Replace the background included with the template with your own to save on printer ink (blue for water, tan for sand)

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Background

Print the coral reef background page or create your own underwater scene using scrapbook paper, construction paper, or a hand-colored ocean background.

Step 2: Create the Sandy Ocean Floor

Print the sandy floor page or use a piece of tan-colored construction paper.

Step 3: Assemble the Diorama Base

Fold a piece of paper in half to create an "L" shape.
Glue the top edge of the coral reef background to the upright section of the folded paper and glue the sandy floor to the bottom section. This creates a freestanding diorama base.

Step 4: Color the Ocean Pieces

Color the coral, seaweed, shells, and ocean animals.

Step 5: Cut Out the Pieces

Carefully cut out all of the reef decorations and sea creatures.

Step 6: Create the 3D Pieces

To make the pieces stand up, fold a small section at the bottom of each cutout to create another "L" shape.
Apply glue to the folded tab.

Step 7: Build Your Coral Reef

Glue the folded tabs onto the sandy floor inside the diorama. Arrange the coral, seaweed, shells, and ocean animals however you'd like to create a colorful underwater reef scene.
