Let’s ditch the paper (it’s so typical) and paint on rocks instead (the kids will love it)! You can go on a rock hunt around the neighborhood or pick some up from the store to make this easy summer craft with your little fish fan.

I love this idea because the kids can play with their fish painted rocks when they are done crafting. I added my kid’s fish rocks to a sensory bin full of sand and they had a swimming adventure. Eventually, I plan on putting them outside in the garden to add some color and fun to the backyard–I’m sure our fish will make it into a pool of water soon!
Whenever my kids are anywhere they always want to bring home anything they found like the rock they just kicked. I have a pile of rocks from places we have been like from our last camping trip, grandma’s house, and the grocery store parking lot (I promise, not a landscaping rock). Since our collection seems to grow daily and we have been in an ocean-themed kind of mood with some of our latest posts being a Jiggling Jellyfish Craft, Starfish Craft and Ocean Sensory Bottle, we choose to make fish after reading some of our favorite fish books Fish Eyes: A Book You Can Count On-affiliate link.
While you have your rocks out you should also make flowers painted on rocks and a Rock Counting 10-Frame activity that’s perfect for our preschooler.
Painted Rock Fish Craft
Supplies:
- Rocks
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- Glue
- Decorations (googly eyes, paper, craft foam…)
Directions:
Have your child paint the rocks and let it dry. I put the paint in plastic lids and the kids put their rocks inside to paint them.
Have your child decorate their fish by adding eyes and fins. We used shimmery pieces of confetti that reminded us of the Rainbow Fish book that we read before craft time.
Once the Rock Fish are Dry and Ready to Play With
To make a fish sensory bin I used Blue Sand-affiliate link and some Glass Gems-affiliate link. It was fun watching them be creative with their new fish. The craft itself is so simple making a simple toy open to imagination! Little Dragon took all the fish out and let each fish have a turn in the water (such a great way to practice taking turns). Little Tiger had a fish party making sure everyone had a friend to play with.

What a great idea, Katie. My daughter loves collecting rocks on our trips to the park and strolls around the neighborhood, but I never even thought of painting them. She’ll definitely love this activity. Thanks for sharing it with us on #shinebloghop this week!
