Whether you’re studying ocean habitats, exploring marine life, or looking for a unique science experiment, this crystal-growing activity is a fun way to combine learning and play.
My kids love anything ocean-themed, so this activity was an instant favorite. Watching the crystals grow overnight feels a little like magic, and the finished coral looks surprisingly similar to real reef structures. Once the crystals were dry, my kids spent even longer building habitats and arranging ocean animals than they did growing the crystals!
It’s one of those activities that combines science and creative play so naturally that learning happens without kids even realizing it.
Tips for Younger Kids
- Adults should prepare and pour the hot Borax solution.
- Younger children can focus on shaping the pipe cleaner coral and building the reef habitat afterward.
- Use larger pipe cleaner shapes that are easier for little hands to handle.
- Encourage kids to predict what the crystals will look like before they form.
Extend the Learning: Learn About Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Although they may look like colorful underwater rocks, coral reefs are actually made up of tiny animals called coral polyps. These small creatures live together in large colonies and build hard skeletons that form the reef structures we see beneath the ocean.
Coral reefs provide food, shelter, and protection for thousands of ocean animals, including fish, sea turtles, octopuses, crabs, and many other marine creatures. Because so many animals depend on them, coral reefs are often called the “rainforests of the sea.”
Coral reefs can be found in warm, shallow oceans around the world. They grow very slowly, sometimes taking many years to form large reef systems.
Pair This Activity with Our Coral Reef Diorama
After growing crystal coral, continue the fun with our Coral Reef Diorama Craft for Kids. Kids can create a colorful 3D underwater scene filled with ocean animals, coral, and seaweed.

Fun Coral Reef Facts for Kids
⭐ Coral is made up of tiny living animals called coral polyps.
⭐ Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor but support about 25% of all marine species.
⭐ Some coral reefs are thousands of years old.
⭐ Sea turtles, clownfish, seahorses, and octopuses all live in or near coral reef habitats.
⭐ The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest coral reef system in the world.
⭐ Coral comes in many colors including pink, orange, yellow, purple, blue, and green.
Questions to Ask Kids
As you build your crystal coral reef, encourage children to think like marine scientists:
- Which animals might live in your coral reef?
- Why do fish need coral reefs for shelter?
- What colors do you see in real coral reefs?
- How is your crystal coral similar to real coral?
- What can people do to help protect coral reefs?
Connect the Science
The crystals that grow on your pipe cleaners aren’t the same as real coral, but they help us create a model of a coral reef habitat. Just as crystals slowly grow on the pipe cleaners, real coral reefs grow over time as tiny coral polyps build their skeletons layer by layer.
Creating a crystal coral reef is a fun way to learn about these amazing underwater ecosystems while exploring the science of crystal formation and growth.
Book Recommendation
One of my favorite books to pair with ocean activities is Over and Under the Coral Reef. My kids and I loved exploring the reef through the pages of this beautiful book while learning about the animals that live there.
The illustrations are stunning and helped inspire our own coral reef creations. After reading, kids can identify animals from the story and imagine which creatures might live among their crystal coral.
If your child enjoys ocean animals, colorful illustrations, and hands-on activities, this book and craft make a wonderful combination. Find out more about this book here. (There is also a matching Over and Under Ocean Book too!)
How to Make a Borax Crystal Coral Reef
What You’ll Need
- Pipe cleaners <– this set comes with a lot of great colors!
- Borax powder <–this one always works!
- Warm water
- Food coloring
- Glass jars or heat-safe containers
- Popsicle sticks
- Spoon for stirring
Optional Supplies for Building a Coral Reef
- Bowl, tray, or shallow container
- Sand
- Small rocks or pebbles
- Small ocean animal figures <– this set has so many animals
- Cardboard base
- Hot glue (adult assistance required)
Directions:
To make crafting easy, print the directions that are available at the end of this post.
Step 1: Shape the Coral
Bend pipe cleaners into coral-inspired shapes. Create branching coral, fan coral, or any unique reef design you would find in an underwater reef.
Step 2: Prepare the Borax Solution
Measure how much water your jar holds. With adult assistance, fill the jar with very warm water.
Mix in 3 tablespoons of Borax for every 1 cup of water and stir until the Borax dissolves. Add a few drops of food coloring if desired.
Step 3: Attach the Coral
Tie each pipe cleaner coral shape to a popsicle stick using string or a small piece of pipe cleaner.
Step 4: Seed the Coral
Dip each pipe cleaner coral into the Borax solution, then remove it and place it on a paper towel to dry completely. This “seeds” the pipe cleaners and helps crystals begin forming more easily.
Step 5: Grow the Crystals
Once the seeded coral is dry, place it back into the jar of Borax solution.
Lay the popsicle stick across the top of the jar so the coral hangs freely without touching the sides or bottom.
Leave the jar undisturbed overnight or for 12–24 hours while crystals form on the pipe cleaners.
Step 6: Remove and Dry
Carefully remove the crystal-covered coral from the jar.
Detach it from the popsicle stick and place it on paper towels to dry completely.
Step 7: Build Your Coral Reef
Once the crystal coral is dry, create an underwater habitat.
Fill a bowl, tray, or container with sand and gently stick the crystal coral into the sand. Add rocks, shells, and small ocean animal figures to complete your coral reef.
For a permanent display, adults can hot glue the crystal coral onto a piece of cardboard before adding sand and decorations. Kids can arrange the coral and sea creatures to design their own unique underwater world. 🌊🪸🐠
Variations and Tips
- Make several coral colors using different food coloring.
- Create a coral reef habitat with toy sea animals.
- Compare crystal growth on different pipe cleaner shapes.
- Add shells and pebbles collected from the beach.
- Keep a crystal growth journal and record observations.
- Use the finished coral as part of an ocean science display.
Save and Print
Save this Borax Crystal Coral Reef Craft for your next ocean unit, summer STEM activity, or homeschool science lesson. Kids will love watching crystals grow and then using their creations to build a colorful underwater world.
