Make a recycled tin can robot craft for kids! A creative Earth Day STEM activity with easy steps—use as a toy or turn it into an optional planter.
Turn trash into treasure with this recycled tin can robot craft for kids—a creative Earth Day activity that’s equal parts fun and meaningful. Inspired by the book Junkyard by Mike Austin, kids will use recycled materials to build their own quirky robots. They can stop there and enjoy their robots as playful creations, or take it a step further and turn them into mini planters for an added STEM twist.

Just like the robots in the story transform piles of junk into something useful and beautiful, this hands-on project encourages kids to reuse everyday items in a creative way while exploring art and STEM.
My kids had so much fun bringing their robots to life! Before planting, they even used them as toys—playing and reenacting parts of the story. I love how activities like this help kids see that recycling isn’t just about throwing things away—it’s about turning old items into something imaginative, useful, and new.
Have more Earth Day fun with these Activities!
Optional Planter Version
If you want to give your robot a second life, it’s easy! Simply fill the finished robot with potting soil and add a small plant or seeds. This makes it a fun way to introduce kids to plant care and responsibility, while keeping the recycled materials theme going.
Kids love choosing their plants—succulents, herbs, or small flowers all work great—and watching their robot “come to life” as the plant grows. But remember, making it a planter is totally optional—these robots are just as fun to play with on their own!
