Learning Through Play
Pretend play offers so many learning opportunities that children often don’t even realize they’re practicing important skills. While running their ice cream shop, they’ll strengthen fine motor skills as they cut, stack, and arrange the printable pieces. They’ll also build confidence speaking with customers, writing down orders, reading menus, and working together to solve problems.
Ice Cream Book to Read Together
One of our favorite books to pair with this activity is Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems.
This funny Elephant & Piggie story follows Gerald as he tries to decide whether to share his delicious ice cream with his best friend. It opens the door to conversations about kindness, friendship, patience, and sharing, making it the perfect companion to an ice cream dramatic play theme.
For older children, try encouraging them to create new ice cream flavors, write daily specials, or calculate totals using the price list. Younger children can simply match scoops to cones, identify colors, or practice counting the number of scoops on each order. Learn more about this book here.

How to Set Up an Ice Cream Shop Dramatic Play Center
Getting everything ready only takes a few minutes. Start by printing all of the pages and cutting out the cones, cups, scoops, toppings, menus, signs, play money, and order forms. If you plan to use the set multiple times, laminating the pieces will help them last through lots of play.
Choose a small area for your ice cream shop, such as a kid-sized table, dramatic play center, or even a corner of the living room. Hang the shop sign, display the menu where customers can easily read it, and organize the ice cream pieces so children can quickly build each order.
A toy cash register makes a fun addition, but you can easily create one from a small cardboard box if you don’t have one. Place the play money nearby along with the order forms and frequent shopper cards to complete the shop.
Let the Pretend Play Begin
Once the shop is set up, children can decide who will work each job. One child might greet customers, another can take orders, while someone else scoops ice cream and another collects payment at the register. After each customer has been served, everyone can switch jobs so they get to experience each role.
As children take orders and build ice cream cones with different scoops, syrups, and toppings, they’re practicing sequencing, following directions, and remembering details. Using play money also gives them an opportunity to count, compare values, and practice simple addition in a meaningful way.
Once set up, your kids will do the rest, playing naturally and letting their imagination make the fun!
Simply print the pages, cut out the pieces, and you’re ready to open for business!
Make It Feel Like a Real Ice Cream Shop
Adding a few simple household items can make dramatic play even more exciting. A real ice cream scoop, empty ice cream containers, plastic bowls, spoons, aprons, or chef hat for dress up to help children fully immerse themselves in the experience. Cotton balls make great whipped cream, while colorful pom-poms can become pretend scoops of ice cream.
These small additions often inspire even more creative storytelling and imaginative play.
