My kids have always loved painting with homemade puffy paint. I almost always keep a can of shaving cream in our craft supplies because it’s inexpensive, easy to use, and turns ordinary painting into something extra exciting. The soft, fluffy texture is irresistible, and watching the paint puff up and dry adds a little bit of magic to the project.
Why You’ll Love This Puffy Paint Ice Cream Craft
- Fun sensory art experience
- Easy homemade puffy paint recipe
- Great for summer, ice cream themes, or letter “I” activities
- Encourages creativity and imagination
- Includes a free printable ice cream cone template
Why Process Art Is So Valuable
One of my favorite things about this activity is that it’s all about the process, not the final product.
Instead of trying to make every ice cream cone look exactly alike, children are free to explore colors, textures, and different ways of spreading the paint. Some kids may create giant melting scoops while others make tiny drips or swirl several flavors together. There isn’t a “right” way to do it.
Process art helps children:
- Build creativity and confidence
- Practice making their own artistic choices
- Strengthen fine motor skills
- Explore color mixing and texture
- Enjoy creating without worrying about perfection
When you put all of the finished projects together, you’ll notice that every melted ice cream cone has its own personality. That’s exactly what makes process art so special!

Directions
Watch the short video tutorial and print the directions that are available at the end of this post.
Step 1: Paint the Ice Cream Cone
Print the free cone template and cut it out.
Paint the cone with brown craft paint. Before the paint dries, drag a fork across the surface to create crisscross lines that look like a waffle cone. Let it dry.
Step 2: Create the Melted Ice Cream
Using a paintbrush or popsicle stick, scoop and spread the puffy paint onto a sheet of paper above where the cone will go.
Instead of making neat scoops, let the paint spread and drip to look like melting ice cream. Kids can swirl colors together or layer different flavors for a giant sundae effect.
Step 3: Add Toppings
Before the paint dries, decorate the ice cream with fun toppings.
Try adding:
- Tiny paper sprinkles
- Paper chocolate chips
- Mini paper marshmallows
- Real sprinkles
- Confetti
- Glitter
- Sequins
The fluffy paint helps hold many of the toppings in place while it dries.
Step 5: Finish the Ice Cream
Glue the waffle cone underneath the melted paint and finish it off with a red pom-pom cherry on top.
Now your colorful melted ice cream masterpiece is ready to display!
