Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with this bright and cheerful Pot of Gold Rainbow Craft for Kids! 🌈🍀
This simple art project uses sponge painting to create a beautiful rainbow, then kids glue on a printable pot of gold, coins, shamrocks, and a fluffy cloud. It’s perfect for preschool, kindergarten, or early elementary classrooms — and it comes with a free printable template to make prep easy!
Even better? There are two shamrock template options to make this craft work for different ages and abilities.
My son had so much fun swiping a rainbow across the page with a sponge and then using the template pieces to decorate his own St. Patrick’s Day picture. It was messy, colorful, and full of laughter — exactly the kind of craft I love sharing!
🍀 Choose Which Template to Use
Since shamrocks have lots of curves that can be tricky for little hands to cut, you can choose from:
- Template Option 1: Shamrocks are already printed on the craft template (no extra cutting required).
- Template Option 2: Separate shamrocks to cut out and glue on (great for extra fine motor practice).

🖍️ Supplies Needed
- Free Pot of Gold & Cloud template (download below)
- Sturdy white paper or cardstock
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Acrylic or washable paint (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
- Sponge (with a straight edge the width of your rainbow)
- Paint palette or paper plate
- Cotton balls (optional, for 3D clouds)

Print the Template and Cut out the Pieces
Download and print the Pot of Gold & Cloud template on sturdy paper for best results.
Carefully cut out:
- Pot of gold
- Gold coins
- Cloud
- Shamrocks (if using the cut-and-glue version)
Set aside.
Sponge Paint the Rainbow 🌈
- Use a sponge with a straight edge that matches the width of the rainbow you want to paint.
- Make sure it’s not too wide to fit on the template.
- Squeeze rainbow-colored paint onto a plate in rainbow order.
- Dip the edge of the sponge into the paint.
- Swipe the sponge in an arc from the cloud outline on the left to the gray oval on the right.
- Let the rainbow dry completely.
Glue the Printable Pieces
- Glue the cloud onto the left side of the rainbow (over the gray cloud outline).
- Glue the pot of gold onto the right side (over the gray oval).
- Glue on the gold coins and shamrocks.
Optional: Add Fluffy Clouds ☁️
Glue cotton balls onto the cloud for a fun 3D effect!
