If your kids are excited to ring in the New Year, this easy New Year’s Eve disco ball craft is the perfect way to kick off the celebration. Every year, millions of people watch the famous ball drop in New York City, a glittering sphere covered in panels of crystal that slowly descends as the countdown begins. Its sparkling lights and shimmering reflections make it one of the most iconic New Year’s traditions.
With this kid-friendly craft, children can recreate some of that same festive magic at home. Using an old CD, a bit of silver paint, craft jewels, and glue, they can design their own miniature disco ball that shines and sparkles just like the real thing.
We found the perfect supplies for kids to craft a New Year’s Eve disco ball decoration, and the best part is that there’s no right or wrong way to make it. My little kids had so much fun experimenting, painting, sticking on jewels, and turning a simple CD into a dazzling decoration ready for the countdown.

- Prepare the CD: Wipe off any dust or smudges so the paint and jewels stick well.
- Paint the CD: Use a paintbrush to cover the shiny side with glue.
- Add Sparkle: Let kids decorate their disco ball with craft jewels, rhinestones, sequins, or metallic confetti. There’s no right or wrong way, kids can create patterns or scatter pieces randomly. Then sprinkle the remaining glue with silver glitter, add more glue and glitter as needed to cover the cd.
- Let It Dry: Allow the glue to fully dry so the decorations stay secure. Optional: Once side one dries, you can repeat the steps and decorate the second side of the cd.
- Optional Hanging Decoration: If you want to hang the disco ball, glue or tape a loop of ribbon or string to the back of the CD. Hang it up or prop it on a shelf to add some sparkle to your New Year’s countdown party.
