The other night I needed something for the kids to do and that’s how I came up with our homemade Mini Light Table. It is perfect for creative Play In The Dark, late summer nights, or is the right size for travel and could be toted along on road trips. It’s so easy you can make one today by upcycling and using things you have around the house (no fancy electrical work required and super cheap). The kids love playing with them and are a great way to help them unwind before bedtime.

If you’re like me, making DIY’s is not only fun, it’s a way of life because they keep the kids entertained and are friendly on my budget. Try making  DIY contrast cards, or Alphabet Letters for activities, or Magnet Sets using dollar store stickers!

What is a Light Table?

A light table for kids is a fun and educational tool that uses a backlit surface to illuminate translucent objects, encouraging hands-on exploration and creativity. There are so many options you can use once your table is made. Try finding things around the house or get a Light Table Toy Set like these Pattern Block Shapes, Letters and Numbers, Rainbow Stones, or Geometric Shapes.

Why are Light Tables Good for Kids?

Light tables are great for kids because they encourage sensory exploration, creativity, and early learning in a fun and engaging way. The illuminated surface enhances visual perception, making activities like color mixing, tracing, and pattern recognition more exciting. They help develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving abilities as kids manipulate translucent objects, letters, and shapes. Light tables also support early STEM concepts by allowing children to experiment with light, shadows, and color blending. Whether used for artistic expression, literacy activities, or scientific discovery, they provide a captivating and educational experience for young learners.

Why Make Your Own Light Table?

Making a DIY light table for kids is a great option for parents because it’s a budget-friendly and space-saving alternative to store-bought versions. With just a few simple materials—like a plastic container, LED lights or a flashlight, and frosted paper—you can create a fun and educational tool without breaking the bank. Plus, homemade light tables can be easily stored away when not in use, making them perfect for small spaces.

(However, if convenience and durability are priorities, purchasing a professionally made light table can be a great investment! This one is amazing and even comes with a sand tray option!)

Supplies:

Directions:

If your container has a frosted lid, all you have to do is place your flashlight or LED lights inside the container, turn off the lights, and play! I wrapped a layer of duct tape around the container to dress it up a bit. When kids are done they can turn off the flashlight and store all the supplies inside the container.

If your container has a clear lid, cut out a piece of white opaque parchment paper that is the same size as your lid and use the clear tape to secure it in place, add some lights, and now it’s ready to play with!

When your kids are done playing, the light table container is the perfect spot to store all the light table toys.

  1. What an awesome inexpensive way to have a light table in my home daycare. I have been pricing light tables for a while now and they are expensive. I even considered a do-it-yourself table buuut I'm not THAT good with a hammer and nails. Now, I just need some victims to eat the whip cream LOLOLOLOL

    1. Thanks so much! I have been dreaming about buying a light table too but the cost has always deterred me and same for me with the idea of trying to build one myself. (Those DIY people amaze me, lol.) Hopefully your victim doesn't suffer too much 🙂 I have two little ones who would gladly volunteer 🙂
