This craft is more than just a craft. As your kids make their fireworks and lace yarn through their paper plate they will improve their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Tips on letting your kids get extra creative:
Our fireworks are red and blue, but not all firework shows are the same just like not all crafts are the same. Here are a few more ideas to try:
- Let your kids paint their paper plate and let it dry
- Let your kids select different yarn colors
- Let your kids string beads on the yarn
We hung our paper plate fireworks on the window and my kids liked how the holes let light shine through.
Tips for Successful Lacing:
Children who make this craft need to have basic fine motor skills so they can lace yarn through their paper plate. If they have never used lacing cards, this is the perfect beginner project because unlike traditional lacing and sewing kid activities, this one allows children to sew stiches wherever they want. Little Tiger (age 6) had no problem making this craft with needed assistance and direction.
I suggest using a large yarn plastic needle or wrapping the end of the yarn with a piece of tape to make a pointed end for kids to lace through the holes in their paper plate.
You can never have enough fireworks! Keep the creativity going with Cupcake Liner Fireworks and adorable Handprint Fireworks and have a spectacular 4th of July!

Firework Paper Plate 4th of July Kids Craft
If you like our Firework Paper Plate Craft I would love for you to PIN IT! It helps others discover it too, which helps us bring you more AWESOME CONTENT like this!
SUPPLIES:
- Paper Plate (We used the smaller sized plates that are cheep and thin, making it easier for the kids to punch holes into.)
- Yarn (We used Red Yarn and Blue Yarn, but you could use any color or multi colored yarn for colorful fireworks)
- Clear Tape or Plastic Yarn Needles
- Hole Punch
- Scissors
DIRECTIONS:
Have your child punch holes into the paper plate. Fold the plate to get the holes in the center of the plate and all around the surface of the pate. If the hole punch is too hard for your children to do you can punch the holes for them. Unfold the paper plate and fold it in different places to keep punching holes.
Pick out a piece of yarn and tie it to the paper plate. Cut off about a foot of yarn for the child to lace through the plate. To make lacing easier thread the end of the yarn through a large plastic yarn needle or tape the end of the yarn with tape.
Let your child lace through the holes on their paper plate. Not all the holes need to be laced through. When they reach the end of the yarn tie the end on the backside of the paper plate and start another piece of yarn.
Here is the front side of the paper plate.
Here is a picture of the backside of the plate. You can see the lacing is all over the place and the yarn was tied several times.
