Is everything that crawls a bug? Is everything with wings a bug? With a basket full of toys kids can investigate what it takes to be called a bug. This simple sorting tray helps them learn to scientifically classify and observe while also helping you as the parent or teacher know what they understand to help them grow.

Supplies:

Plastic animals or random toys

Tray

Directions:

Talk about what a bug is. We looked through our insect and bug books, discussed the parts of an insect, and we plan on doing this Color and Label Bee Printable next.

Place all the items in a basket. Have child sort them into two piles (1 for bugs, 1 for things that aren’t bugs). We had more bugs when we did this activity then you can see in the picture but before I could photograph the activity the kids helped the bugs fly and didn’t bother to see where they landed–oops!
