Paper Feather Craft and Free Template

Print the craft template and make your own decorative feathers out of paper. This craft is fun for kids and adults! The feathers can be painted, colored, or decorated anyway you like.

Make craft time fabulous today and make a paper feather. Children and adults will find making this craft easy and enjoyable using our free craft template, printable directions, and video tutorial.

The last Feather Craft we made was all about the “fringe” and cutting to add a feathery look. This feather craft is all about the art decorations and is easily one of my favorite crafts. Every feather turns out different. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to decorate your feather which makes it fun for everyone to make. Take a look at the different artistic styles we came up with, then make your own.

How Long will it take to make your Feather Craft?

You can take as little or as long as you want to decorate them. Little Tiger (age 10) would spend a long time painting each feather and placing each paint stroke in the right spot while Little Dragon (age 8) enjoyed adding lots of color quickly. I liked (no age given-hehe) to make my feathers have lots of color and depth with layers of paint. Each technique turned out great!

How Can I Decorate My Paper Feathers?

We used glue and watercolors to paint our paper feathers. The glue adds texture and the watercolor lets the colors blend together (see photo examples). Honestly, you can use whatever art supplies you have lying around like markers, pencils, or paint. Each type of art supply provides a different style and unique look so you can make your paper feathers “perfect!” You could also take it a step further and glue things onto your feathers like glitter and gems, or natural things like pine needles and dirt.

What Can I Do With My Paper Feathers?

Once you have your feathers done you may wonder what to do with them. Here is a list of ideas:

  • Tape them on the wall, they are beautiful
  • Make a collage
  • Make a Feather Mobile
  • Make a Paper Feather Garland
  • Place them on a table for decoration on Thanksgiving

DIY Paper Feather Craft

If you like our Paper Feather Craft I would love for you to PIN IT! It helps others discover it too, which helps us bring you more AWESOME CONTENT like this

Supplies:

  • Feather Template (I printed our template out on White cardstock)
  • Watercolor Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • (Optional) School Glue
  • Scissors
  • Cup of Water (Used to rinse paintbrush)

TIP: When we paint and glue I like to use White cardstock because it’s thicker and holds up better and as an added bonus the colors are usually brighter and prettier.

Directions:

You can watch our short tutorial video or read the directions below.

For your convenience, you can also print the directions at the end of this post!

Print the feather template out on white paper.

Optional: If you want to add texture to your feather you can use school glue to make designs on the feather. Once the glue is dry, the feather is ready to be painted.

Paint or decorate your paper feather. We used watercolor paints. Little Tiger (age 10) added speckles to her feather by loading one paintbrush with water and color, then tapping it toward the paper so the paint splattered onto the paper.

When the paint is dry, cut the feathers out. The bottom of the feather has a lot of small lines so you may need to help children cut it out or bubble cut around the fringe like we did (leaving white space).

  • These little bugs took no time at all to make and are a pretty self-guided craft for kids. Little Tiger finished chopping potatoes while helping me make dinner and found our bags full of lids on the counter (3 bags to be exact–no lid gets left behind in our house :). Before long I looked over and there were 3 bugs staring back at me and no mess in sight! Since the little bugs sitting on my counter make me smile when I look at them I thought you should have some too.
  • This activity helps kids learn to count to 100, introduces them to place values, helps with number recognition and number relationships while allowing them to be actively involved as they learn instead of just staring at a chart with lots of numbers which can be overwhelming.
  • We love stars around here so naturally one of our favorite things that live in the ocean is starfish aka sea stars. They come in all different shapes, sizes, and textures so we have provided you with a free craft template to make a big, medium, and small size starfish craft with your kids. We also show you how to take your craft to the next level by giving it texture and folding it to give it dimension, and if you want you can give it added color with paint. Each one will turn out amazing!
  • When this sunset Tissue Paper Craft is hung in a window it magically seems to glow resembling the beauty of a real sunset on the horizon. No glue or scissor skills are required, so this craft is easy to clean up and perfect for kids of all ages!
  • One of the most beloved children’s authors has to be Dr. Seuss who happens to have a birthday coming up on March 2nd. Did you know he wasn’t technically a doctor?– but that’s okay we still love him anyways! To start celebrating my kids picked out Horton Hears a Who!
  • The set comes in a print-in-color or a color-me (coloring book) version. You can print the set out and assemble it, or extend this activity further by letting your students color their own spinner increasing their recognition of each picture.
