Homemade Caramel Apple Slices are a wonderful treat to make during apple season! They are like caramel apples on a stick, but way easier to take a bite of because they are served a slice at a time. The chewy caramel satisfies the need for a sweet treat while adding a slice of refreshing and nutritious apple, certainly a win during fall shenanigans or a Halloween party!

The caramel apple slices are so much fun because they are easy to make and delicious to eat! I got ya covered with directions and photos to guide you along the way. Your kiddos who love to help in the kitchen can follow along (with caution or parent help when needed during the “hot” spots in the directions).

I’m sure your family is like mine, and everyone has different taste preferences. So feel free to add ingredients like pretzels, sprinkles, mini m&m candy, toffee, or coconut flakes. You can also leave out any of the ingredients, like my kids prefer to pass on the nuts and sea salt.

You could even make this recipe a family activity and each person could make their own caramel apple slice, just the way they like it–Perfect!

Why make Caramel Apple Slices and not a Whole Caramel Apple?

You may be wondering why the slice…  here are the benefits I have come up with.

  • Using an apple slice lets you make several caramel apple treats with just one apple
  • They are easier to eat
  • Serving a caramel apple slice on a stick is easy and convenient
  • Kids will eat an apple without it having to be peeled

How Long Do Caramel Apple Slices Last?

Make sure to follow the directions to keep the apple from browning.

Caramel apple slices are best served within the same day you make them or within 24 hrs. Once made, just pop them into your fridge to keep them fresh until you are ready to eat.

Allergy Recommendations

Before any food projects with kids, make sure to check with their parents for any food allergies and use precaution and make adjustments as needed. This recipe calls for nuts but if anyone is allergic to them, do not use them or even include them to avoid any cross-contamination.

Replace the Chocolate: Enjoy Life makes dairy-free and gluten-free food for kiddos (and adults) with allergies. It is a great alternative for those who need to replace melting chocolates (read the ingredients and manufacturing information).

  • Tip: To make the Enjoy Life dairy-free chocolate ready for dipping, add a bit of coconut oil (or another allergy-friendly oil) to the chocolate until it becomes smooth and ready for dipping.

Replace the Caramel: Cocomels makes a Coconut Milk Caramel that you could try with this recipe. I have not had a chance to try these but the reviews look great!

Replace the Heavy Cream: Silk makes a Dairy Free Liquid Heavy Cream that works great in recipes. I like how it is a liquid and not powder.

Prep: 15 minutes

Yields: approx. 7-10 depending on size of apples

Supplies:

  • 1 Baking Sheet
  • Wax paper or Parchment Paper
  • Sharp Knife
  • 2 Small Microwave Safe Bowls
  • Paper Towel
  • Pastry Brush
  • 2 Spoons
  • Popsicle sticks

Ingredients:

  • 2 granny smith apples or your favorite apple
  • 1 cup melting chocolate, almond bark, or chocolate chips
  • 10 ounces soft caramels
  • 2 Tbsp heavy cream
  • ½ cup chopped pecans
  • 1/8 cup sea salt flakes
  • Lemon juice

Directions:

Line a baking sheet with wax paper and it to the side.

Wash and slice your apples into about 1/2 inch wide slices, making sure they are thick enough to slide a popsicle stick into it. Depending on how large your apple is, you should be able to get between 3-5 slices.

Carefully cut apple slices for caramel apples

Carefully use a sharp knife (adult only) to cut a slit into the bottom of the apple slice. Then, slide a popsicle stick into it.

Use a paper towel to pat down each side of the apple slices to remove any moisture so the caramel can stick to the apple.

Take out any seeds and lay the apples down on your prepared baking sheet.

Melt the melting chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl for 30-second increments. Stir, and repeat until it is melted.

  • Tips for melting chocolate: Make sure water does not get mixed in with the chocolate because it will keep it from melting smoothly. Also, keep an eye on your chocolate so it doesn’t burn.

Spread the chocolate on top of the apple and let it harden. You could even pop them in the fridge for a minute if it’s taking longer than expected to harden.

Spread melted chocolate onto apple slices to make caramel apples

To make the caramel sauce, unwrap the caramels and place them in your second small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30-second increments, stirring between each session until the caramel is melted. Drizzle the heavy cream in, and continue to stir until the mixture is smooth and all mixed together.

Mix Caramel to make Caramel Apple Dip

Use a spoon to spread the caramel on top of the chocolate. Avoid getting the caramel too close to the edge of the apple. Use a fork to pop any large air bubbles.

Spread Caramel Sauce on top of the apple slices

Quickly, while the caramel is still hot, sprinkle the pecans, sea salt, and any other toppings you like on top. (Kids may prefer to skip the sea salt.)

How to Help Keep Your Apple Slices From Turning Brown

Brush any exposed edges of the apple with lemon juice to reduce browning.

Refrigerate the apples until you are ready to serve. Then enjoy the best apples of the season!

Tips and Tricks:

  • Caramel apples are best made just prior to serving but they can be refrigerated if needed so you can make them in advance.
  • Be sure to use a towel to remove any excess moisture or the chocolate will not stick on the apples.
  • If you want to avoid browning, brush a small amount of lemon juice on the exposed apple surface after the apple is assembled.
