I always have a stack of boxes at my house because ordering online is so much easier than hauling the kids to the store. That and the stores have been closed lately (thanks-not thanks to covid). So, to put them to good use I grabbed some paintbrushes and threw together a car ramp to give my kiddos something to do.
Need something else for your little car and truck enthusiast?
When you need a quiet time activity, grab these Truck Heads/Tails Puzzles that you can print at home and let your kids match together and make these cardboard tube cars, then can even zoom down the ramp!
All my kids (age 9, 7, 1) had fun sending cars down the ramp but my littlest guy couldn’t get enough of it. The cars went up, down, and sometimes sideways as he played.
Tip: For added education, kids can learn about physics Force and Motion with this video by Kids Academy on Youtube and then try putting toy cars or balls of different weights and sizes down the ramp to see which goes the farthest.
How to Make a Cardboard Box Car Ramp
Supplies:
- 1 long rectangle box
- 1 box that is the same height as the rectangle box
- Black paint-affiliate link
- White paint
- Paintbrush
- Toy Cars-affiliate link or balls
- Tape (We used Black tape-affiliate link, but any color would work)
Directions: How to Make a Cardboard Box Ramp
Lay the rectangle box down and cut two of the sides to make the ramp. Tape the bottom of the ramp down and paint the ramp black. If you wanted to you could cut off the sides, but we chose to leave ours on to make it easier for the cars to stay on the ramp.
Paint the second box black. You don’t need to paint all the sides but you can if you want to.
I cut two of the flaps off the second box so that it would sit flat on the ground.
Once the black paint is dry tape the boxes together and add the white lines to the ramp and the top of the second box.
Feel free to paint extra details to the empty spaces on the box like buildings, trees, bushes, stop signs, you name it.
Now comes the fun part. Let your kiddo push cars up and down the ramp.
