These pumpkin math mats are just what your child needs to get learning this fall and Halloween, so come download your free set. If you know me, you know I like to make printables that can be used over again and work for multiple stages so your homeschooling child or classroom students can all benefit from the same Printable Activity.
So this set includes a blank pumpkin mat for discovery and numbers 0-10. that have a 10-frame, and a place to trace and write numbers (1) or number words (“one”). I’m sure you will be able to come up with lots of math activities and you can check out the ones I have below.
One of my favorite things about 10-frames is it allows kids to learn on their own. As they are directed to fill the frame and use one-to-one correspondence (one pumpkin per dot, one pumpkin per count) they will automatically end up with the right amount of pumpkins. 10-frames also help children learn to subitize (recognize an amount by seeing it without needing to count). This will help as their math skills develop.

Preparing the Activity
Supplies:
- Pumpkin Math Number Mats (Available to download at the end of this post)
- Pumpkin counters (Pumpkin Erasers, Pumpkin Buttons, Acrylic Pumpkins
- Pencil or Dry Erase Pocket and Washable Dry-Erase Fine Line Markers (optional) I like to put our printables in a dry erase pocket or laminate them and use washable dry erase markers on the lamination. It allows kids the chance to practice over and over again. We have found that the regular dry erase markers do not always erase like they are supposed to which is why we recommend the washable kind.

Counting Pumpkins on 10-frames
Using the 10-frames section, encourage your child to place pumpkins on each black circle on the frame. The empty circles should remain blank. As they place them one-by-one they can count or just place them on. The 10-frames give them a self-correcting way to learn because they don’t have to be told how many pumpkins they need, they can just place the right amount on the frame.
Counting Pumpkins in the Pumpkin Patch
This section can be done two ways.
Pumpkins on the 10-Frames: Encourage your child to move each pumpkin one at a time from the 10-frame to the pumpkin patch.
Pumpkins in the Pumpkin Patch: Encourage your child to count the pumpkins in the pumpkin patch and move them to the 10-frames.
Tracing and Writing Numbers
Encourage your child to trace the number and then write it on the line provided to the right. If your child isn’t ready to write you should skip this part to avoid frustration. If your child can trace, but not write the number on their own I would skip the blank line on the right or you can write the number and have them trace it again.
Tracing and Writing Number Words
Encourage your child to read the number word and then trace and write it. Again, adapt this part if your child is not ready to write letters. You can always do this activity again and add skills that were previously skipped when your child is ready.
