As kids sit down to this Halloween pumpkins math tray they will be working on number recognition, counting, subitizing, and fine motor skills. This activity is easy to set up, and can be played two different ways so you can set it up once, and use it over gain during October.
The Oriental Trading Companies Halloween Headquarters Page has tons of fun stuff and some of them are already on sale (You don’t have to wait until after Halloween to get great stuff!) One such item I found was mini pumpkin erasers currently on sale (if you don’t know, ever since the first grade I have LOVED mini erasers). So I ordered a set to use as cute math manupulatives with the kids. Since they are the perfect size for the kids to use tongs with I added a set to the activity so they could work on strengthening their hands and improving fine motor skills. Now you know how this activity came about… now let’s get to it and start learning!
Halloween Pumpkin Counting and Fine Motor Skills Activity
Supplies:
Pumpkin Erasers (link to product)
Mini pumpkin tray (If you can’t find one you can use an egg carton)
Number cards
Directions:
To set up the activity put the numbered cards in a pile and place the tongs and pumpkins next to the tray.
Have child look at the number, name the number, and place the correct amount of pumpkins in the tray.
I was worried that Little Dragon would find the tongs too difficult and become frustrated but he didn’t mind them at all because the pumpkins were easy to grab.
or
Fill the tray with pumpkins, have child look at the number, name the number, and remove pumpkins until the correct amount of pumpkins remain in the tray.
