If you’re looking for a fun play dough activity for kids, my Farm Animal Play Dough Mats Set is the perfect fit! This playdough activity pack gives kids a chance to identify 9 different farm animals, recreate the shape of those animals with playdough, and practice reading and writing if desired.
Each mat includes a guided template to make a playdough farm animal and the name of the animal written at the bottom. Kids can either make the letters out of playdough, color the letters, or trace the letters with a dry erase marker. It’s a fun way to add reading, letter practice, and increase the usability of the mats for kids to use for years or with multiple ages (toddler, preschool, and kindergarten).
When to Do Farm Activities with Kids
Farm activities are particularly fun during spring, summer, and fall when baby animals appear on the farm and when it’s warm enough to take a trip to your local farm to take your kids to see the animals or pick out a pumpkin.

Benefits of Playing with Playdough and Using these Mats
If your kids are anything like mine, they absolutely LOVE play dough. And who can blame them? It’s colorful, fun to squeeze, and can be used to make all kinds of things!
Not only is play dough fun to use (and really cheap to buy or make), it’s also a fantastic learning and sensory tool, making it a perfect addition to your play area — both at home and at school.
Building hand strength
Not only is squeezing play dough fun (and a stress-reliever), it also helps kids build the strength in their hands and tendons needed to control pencils and scissors. Since kids tend to do different things with play dough (like squeezing, rolling, flattening, poking, chopping, cutting, and pulling apart), they’ll give different muscles in their hands a good workout.
Practice Fine Motor Skills
Manipulating playdough into different shapes (with or without tools) is a great way for kids to practice and develop their fine motor skills.
Encourage Imagination
Playdough, in and of itself, can provide kids with lots of opportunities to get creative and make all kinds of things their little minds come up with. When you add in other materials, the open-play options become innumerable!
Here are just a few things you can have on hand to encourage your kids or students to use their imaginations:
- Things found in nature: Feathers, sticks, leaves, pine cones
- Things from the craft room: Buttons, sequins, glitter, scissors
- Things from the kitchen: Cookie cutters, rolling pins, pizza cutter, muffin tin, small bowls, spoons, butter knives
- Things from the toy room: Toy cards, plastic letters or numbers, small animals, small dolls and figures
- Wooden/plastic letters and numbers
- Essential oils-add a pleasant smell to your playdough for another sensory experience
