We had so many boxes, we built our castle outside, and put a drawbridge, windows, and doors that my kids loved opening, closing, and crawling out of. Their castle kept them busy for hours!

One of the best parts about building a cardboard castle is that it works just as well inside as it does outside. On sunny days, take the fun to the backyard or driveway where there’s plenty of room to spread out—and maybe even add grass, sticks, or rocks for castle landscaping. On rainy or too-hot days, set up indoors in the living room, playroom, or even the garage. What You’ll Need
- Cardboard Boxes
Chances are you’ve got a few lying around the house—especially if Amazon is on a first-name basis with your porch. Search your storage spaces (garage, basement, attic, or shed) and collect boxes of all shapes and sizes. A mix makes things even more fun! - Scissors
Make sure you have a sturdy pair of scissors that can cut through cardboard. - Tape
You’ll need strong tape (duct tape or packing tape work great) to hold your castle together. - Markers, Colored Pencils, or Crayons
Decorating the castle is half the fun—so have some drawing tools handy! - Construction Paper
Great for adding details like flags, doors, windows, or fancy trim.
How to Build a DIY Cardboard Castle
The best part about this activity? There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Let your kids take the lead and use their creativity!
We started with a large rectangular box (think appliance-sized) as the main base of our castle. From there, we attached smaller boxes with tape onto the top to create towers, and turrets.
If you don’t have a long box, place large boxes side by side to create different rooms in your castle. You can cut out doors to make an entrance into each box.
Using scissors and knives, I carefully cut out windows and doors so the kids could climb in and out. (Cardboard can be hard to cut, so I don’t recommend letting kids cut it on their own without special tools made for kids like this Cardboard Cutting Kit for Kids)
Then came the decorating—drawing bricks, stones, vines, and other castle-like features all over the outside. My kids loved using our Tempera Paint Sticks to add decorations.
The finishing touch? Flags made from construction paper flying from the turrets.
It doesn’t have to be fancy—it just has to be fun!
Make It Your Own
Don’t be afraid to raid your craft stash. Add stickers, glitter, cotton balls for clouds, or fabric scraps for curtains. Let your kids’ imaginations guide the build. Want to add a moat? Draw one with chalk outside or build one out of blue tissue paper. The possibilities are endless when you turn cardboard into a kingdom.
