My kid’s and many of you loved our Hungry Caterpillar Craft Book so much that I thought Halloween would be a perfect opportunity to make another flap book craft. Because I know each child and classroom is different I made two different versions. One version of the 5 Little Pumpkins craft allows children to cut out pumpkins with jack-o-lantern faces already on the pumpkin. The second version allows children to draw the jack-o-lantern faces on the pumpkins. My daughter (Little Tiger, age 6) who likes to craft and color enjoyed being able to create her own jack-o-lantern faces while my son (Little Dragon, age 4) appreciated having the faces printed on his pumpkin’s.

To add another element of learning both sets are a perfect time to review what emotions look like. As we completed our craft we would recite the song and decide which pumpkin looked like they were saying each verse. For example, “Oh my it’s getting late (looked scared) and, “It’s only Halloween fun” (looked happy).

Staple 2 pieces of black paper together on the short side of the paper to make approximately a 17×11 piece of paper.

Staple the song lyrics to the top of the paper. (We didn’t do this step because I hadn’t created it yet. As I was typing up the directions I thought the lyrics would be a great addition and made a page for you–hope you like it :).

Print out the pumpkin template on orange paper. Print out the gate and pumpkin stem template on brown paper. Print out the song lyrics on white paper.

Have your child cut out the song lyrics, pumpkins, gate pieces, and stems. Little Tiger was able cut out all the pieces in one sitting while Little Dragon cut out the pumpkins on one day and the stems and gate pieces the next. If time is a concern you could always cut out some of the pieces before hand. I’m proud of my little guy, he has been working on holding his scissors correctly, using his free hand to guide the paper, and not getting frustrated as he learns to control his scissors. It takes hard work and a lot of fine motor skills, crafting is just one way to practice this important life skill.

Have your child assemble the gate and glue it down on the black paper. Make sure they leave room for the pumpkins to sit on top of the gate and room for the gate posts below the long gate plank.

Have your child glue the pumpkins to the top of the gate. Depending on which set you use you will need to help make sure they are glued in order. The set without the jack-o-lantern faces has numbers inside so make sure they are glued down in order to help kids practice number recognition as they sing the song. Once they are glued down, kids can add faces to their jack-o-lanterns. Little Tiger liked looking at jack-o-lantern face patterns on the computer to get an idea of how she wanted her pumpkins to look.

If you used the set with the jack-o-lantern faces printed on the pumpkins have your child open each pumpkin and glue the numbers in order. Start with the first pumpkin on the left and glue the number 1 and so forth. As I mentioned earlier, we talked about emotions and face expressions as we decided what the pumpkin should look like for each verse. Little Dragon thought it was fun that each of his pumpkins had a matching amount of candies to eat too–another way to add in number practice.
