I’m so excited to share this activity because it was an absolute hit with the kiddos! Not only is it easy to set up, but it’s also a blast to do and turns out beautifully. If you love Disney’s Frozen as much as we do, this is the perfect activity to add a little icy magic to your day!

One of the best parts? It fits into so many categories, making it a versatile favorite. The cold, slippery ice and smooth, swirled paint create an amazing sensory experience. The messiness (and the fact that ice melts!) makes it a fantastic outdoor activity. The creative freedom in mixing colors and designs makes it a wonderful art project. And—get this—my kids actually ate their masterpieces when they were done, so you could even call it a treat like a popsicle (bonus: that means we can add taste to our sensory list)!

No matter which category you put it in, one thing’s for sure—it’s pure frozen fun! Looking for more icey fun? Try this ice painting activity and make ice cream in a bag!

I let my kids take the lead with this activity, giving them a break from our usual structured projects. It was refreshing to let them explore, create, and just have fun! We started painting with Q-tips, but when the cotton began to come off, they quickly ditched them and switched to using their fingers instead—turning it into an even more hands-on, sensory experience! Since it was hot outside, the kids enjoyed the cool touch.

Here they are enjoying their beautiful Frozen Fractals paintings…apparently fractals are yummy! 🙂

This weekend, we had the chance to attend a Disney Princess party, and Ms. Tiger got to meet Elsa and Anna from Frozen—it was pure magic! She didn’t even mind waiting in the (very long) line—meanwhile, Mr. Tickles kept busy with two suckers. When it was finally our turn, she didn’t just stand in awe—she actually smiled for the photo, making it such a special moment for both of us!

To celebrate our magical weekend, I’m excited to share our Frozen Fractals Ice Painting activity.

Supplies:
Containers to freeze water in-(I used silicone muffin cups and small glass dishes)
Water
Corn Syrup
Paintbrushes
Food Coloring
Sprinkles (optional)
Small bowls for paint

Directions:
1.  Fill containers with water but remember to leave room at the top because the water will expand when frozen. If you want, feel free to add some food coloring and sprinkles to your water (I’m sorry, I forgot to take a picture of this step).

We had some ice blocks that were frozen overnight and they worked the best. I made the muffin cup ice the same day and they would have lasted longer if they had been solid ice and not mushy in the middle. I even put a few ice cubes in the water when I was making them to try and freeze them faster.

2.  To make the paint, put 2-3 Tbs. of corn syrup in a bowl or muffin tin for as many colors of paint you want to make, then and add food coloring and stir.

3.  Give kids ice, paint, paint brushes and let them create! Isn’t it beautiful how the colors swirl together on top of the ice?

It was so hot outside and my kids were so messy that when we were done with the activity I sprayed them off with the hose before taking them inside. They didn’t mind at all!

I hope you enjoy your frozen fractals painting! You may also enjoy:

    1. Thanks Jennifer, my kids too! I am pretty sure we are on track to have watched Frozen for 365 days straight…at least it feels that way 🙂 lol

    1. Thanks Ana 🙂 it's so true, I have yet to meet a kiddo who doesn't like Frozen.

  1. Ooh how lovely! We had fun with liquid watercolours and frozen ice bowls last year. It would be interesting to use corn syrup too. (Though I'd have to find an equivalent that's available here in the UK!)

    1. Hi Lucinda, thanks for visiting! Painting ice is always fun. I wonder of honey would work if you can't find any corn syrup because it is so similar in consistency.

  2. Painting and ice are always fun tools for play!
