This year I am trying to add a lot more singing to our school days because songs are a fun way for kids to learn and a childhood tradition I don’t want my kids to miss out on. Since the school year recently started and we are in Back to School mode we have been singing The Wheels on the Bus go Round and Round.

The free printable sentence strips that we put in our Pocket Chart (affiliate link) let kids see the words as they sing so they can learn to read as they connect the words of the song with the words on the board. All you have to do is print out the sentence strips, cut them out, and you’re ready to sing in your classroom, daycare, or home. Add some extra fun and have kids shake these DIY Musical Instruments that you can make and use all year long.

My kids like to take turns picking out what is on the bus (wheels, horn, people…) and coming up with an action for us to do as we sing like waving our arms around to look like the wipers on the bus, or crawling around like the baby who says whaa. I figure the more movement the better so they can get their wiggles out before sitting down again at the table.

I based the words on one of our favorite and ever-so-popular children’s songwriters, Raffi, so I was thrilled to find this book that the kids could enjoy reading as they sing.
