Use this activity to turn boring flashcards into a fun hands on language activity. Your kindergartner or first grader can build CVC words to practice reading and spelling. As always, you can adapt this activity to match your child’s skill level. If you don’t have a set of letter maniuplatives you can make your own with our free printable DIY Letter Milk Cap Set.

We love using things we have around the house to make activities like this word building activity. Not only did we reuse our DIY Letter Milk Cap Set, but we also used an empty egg carton to easily display the letters. Little Tiger enjoyed having a spot for each letter which took away added frustration from finding the right letter and kept her concentrated on building words.

Directions:
Set out the letters so the child can see them. You may want to only include the letters needed to build the words they will be working on. We set up our letters in alphabetical order, you could also sort the vowels and the consonants.
Have child flip over a flashcard with a CVC word and use the letters to build the word. Once the word is built have the child touch each letter in order and sound out the word (C-A-T). It was so exciting for the both of us to here her Little Tiger exclaim, “I can read!” She is a hands on learner so it was nice being able to turn our flashcards into an activity that would keep her attention and let her explore letter sounds as she learned.
