Running with a colorful ribbon trailing behind them is pure joy for kids! The way it dances in the wind as they dash around adds an extra layer of excitement to their play. It’s such a simple yet engaging way to burn off energy, enjoy the fresh air, and encourage movement. Whether they’re pretending to be soaring birds, swirling fairies, or speedy racecars, the possibilities for imaginative play are endless!

During our latest outdoor ribbon run, my kids were laughing and zooming around like crazy with their ribbons fluttering behind them. It was the perfect way to shake off extra wiggles, and I even turned it into a sneaky learning moment for my toddler.

This simple outdoor activity is a fantastic way to combine movement, sensory play, and early learning all in one. So grab a ribbon, head outside, and let the fun begin!

Why is Gross Motor Play Good for Kids?

Gross motor play involves making large movements with our body. Kids benefit from these large movements to learn coordination, balance, and strength. Other activities to encourage these large movements are Polka Dot Jumping Game, Animal Tag Game, and keep the color fun going with this Gross Motor Color Match Game for Kids.

Rainbow Ribbon Run

Supplies:
Different ribbons that are solid color cut into approx. 3 ft. pieces

Directions:

Lay the ribbons out across from the kids and assign each child a color. Then, let the race begin! Call out a color, and watch them dash to grab their matching ribbon before racing back to their starting point. To add a fun twist, instead of just naming colors, try giving clues like, “Find the ribbon that’s the color of the green grass, the blue sky, or the yellow flowers!” It turns a simple color game into an exciting scavenger hunt!

My kiddos absolutely loved the challenge, and I loved watching them engage in active learning—without even realizing they were learning!

Assigning colors is a great way to reinforce color recognition while making sure everyone gets a turn. Sometimes, I gave each child more than one color so they could collect multiple ribbons—double the fun, double the movement! If you have a bigger group, turn it into a relay race where one runner goes at a time until all the ribbons have been claimed.

While we had the ribbons in our hands, we took the fun even further! We spun in circles, waved our arms in big loops, and even practiced cross-body movements to sneak in some good cross-lateral exercise, which is great for brain development. Since we have some low-hanging branches in our yard, I also tied up a few ribbons for the kids to jump up and grab—it was a hit!

Oh, and speaking of unpredictable fun—check out their picture! My daughter was dressed for hot weather, and my son was bundled up for the cold. We experienced both in the same day… classic springtime, lol!
