Today is all about shapes! Ms. Tiger and I built our very first Shape Factory to help us learn, sort, and match shapes in a fun, hands-on way. We grabbed foam shapes from the Target Dollar Spot, but you can use any small shapes you have on hand—or make your own from cardboard or foam sheets so you can play along too!

Once your factory is made, your kids can use it for shapes and all sorts of things! It’s perfect for sorting by color, practicing counting, matching objects, or even creating pretend play scenarios like running a toy factory. The open-ended design means it can be changed and used over and over again.

Part of the Creative Preschool Series

I’m thrilled to share that this post is the very first in our Creative Preschool series—a collaboration between myself, Katie, here at A Little Pinch of Perfect, and some amazing fellow bloggers:

Each of us will be sharing themed activities to spark learning and creativity for preschoolers. Be sure to visit their blogs (linked at the end of this post) for more shape-themed fun!

Why Learning Shapes Matters

Learning shapes is an important early math and cognitive skill for preschoolers. It helps children recognize patterns, improve spatial awareness, and build the foundation for geometry, letter recognition, and problem-solving. Hands-on activities like our Shape Factory make learning fun and memorable by letting kids explore and play while they learn.

Shape Factory Preschool Activity

Build a hands-on preschool shape activity with your child using recycled materials! This fun shape factory craft helps kids learn shapes, sort, match, and play—all while boosting problem-solving skills.

Let’s get building! This activity encourages problem-solving, fine motor skills, and shape recognition—all while playing.

Supplies:

  • Small shapes (We used foam ones from Target)
  • 2 empty chip tubes (like Lays Stax)
  • Extra chip lids or flat surfaces from milk jugs
  • 1 small box with lid (shoebox size)
  • 2 medium-sized boxes (cereal boxes work great)
  • Wrapping paper or craft paper
  • Paint
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife (adult use only)
  • Duct tape

How to Build Your Shape Factory

Step 1: Decorate Your Boxes

Measure and cut paper to wrap your boxes. If using craft paper, paint and decorate it first. Let it dry, then wrap the boxes and lids separately so the lid can open and close.

Step 2: Create Shape Sorter Lids

Trace your shapes onto the chip lids and cut out the shapes. Make the holes slightly larger so the shapes fit through easily.
No extra chip lids? Use milk jugs! Trace your lid onto a flat jug surface and cut it out. We got about 3 lids per jug. Cover the edges with tape so they’re not sharp.

Step 3: Assemble the Tube System

Cut holes in the bottoms of your chip tubes and the top of your shoebox lid. Tape the tubes onto the box so the shapes can slide down and land inside.

Step 4: Make the Ramp

Inside the top box, tape in a cardboard ramp at an angle so the shapes slide toward the front opening.

Step 5: Add a Shape Output

Cut two holes in the front of the box for the shapes to fall out of.

Step 6: Stack and Finish

Tape the small decorated box on top of one of your medium-sized boxes to give it height. Your Shape Factory is ready to use!

How to Play with the Shape Factory

Invite your child to match a shape to the correct lid (our “steel plate”) and place it on top of the smoke stacks (chip tubes). Push the shape down the tube and watch it travel through the factory and come out the front—so fun!

Add variations to boost learning:

  • Ask for a specific shape or color
  • Count how many shapes come out
  • Sort shapes into groups after they exit the factory

This setup encouraged Ms. Tiger to think critically and test her guesses without needing correction from me. She loved the independence of checking her own answers, and it made for a more positive experience.

    1. Hi Emma, that's what my son likes to do. My daughter likes to use the plates. It's fun how they can both play together at different skill levels and ages.
