It’s time to dim the lights and spark some curiosity with a fun shadow science activity! While sensory play often focuses on touch, this activity gives kids a chance to explore the sense of sight in a whole new way. All you need is a flashlight and a few small toys—chances are, you already have plenty around the house. It’s a simple setup with lots of room for discovery, creativity, and a little bit of science magic!
The idea was inspired by Toddler Tales Forest Shadows activity where she shares a fun song and craft to go along with the activity. Stop by to see who inspired us (Toddler Tales)!
My kiddos loved this activity and seemed to lose all fear of the dark—at least during the activity! One flashlight will work just fine, but fair warning: both of my kids insisted on having one in hand, so you might find yourself scrambling for extras. It also turned out to be the perfect quiet-time activity before bed—calm, focused, and full of wonder. Shadow Science and Sensory Play for Kids – Hands-On Light and Shadow Exploration
Supplies:
Small toys
Flashlight
Blank wall or poster board
Cardboard box (optional) We cut out a cardboard box to make a stage for our toys.
Colored plastic (optional)
Directions:
1. Turn off the lights, turn on the flashlight and place toys in front of the flashlight to create a shadow on the wall or board.
Fun things to try, observe, and talk about:
- Move the toy toward the light
- Move the toy away from the light
- Add multiple toys in front of the light to create a mega shadow
- Use two flashlights to create two shadows
- Move the flashlight to each side of the toy
- Put different colors of clear plastic in front of the flashlight (example, soda bottle, lid, cellophane)
- Use shadows and toys to tell a story using the shadows
- Secretly place an animal in front of the flashlight and let kiddos guess what animal it is
- Point out recognizable features, like trunk, long neck, tail…
First thing you do when handed a flashlight is check it out, even if blinded for a few minutes after! Please try and keep your kiddo from staring at the light, it’s no good for eyes.
Teamwork putting animals in front of the light.
Look how big our zebra looks when he is farthest away from the light.
Have a great day and a fun time in the dark!
