How to Make a Crayon Paper Plate Wreath Craft for Back to School

  • Step 1: Paint the wreath

    Cut the center out of a paper plate to make a wreath shape. Paint the entire paper plate green and set it aside to dry completely.

    Step 2: Make the crayons

    Print the crayon template on colored paper or cardstock (perfect for the classroom set template) or trace it onto the paper or cardstock. We used light blue, yellow, pink, green, and orange, but kids can use any colors they like. Cut out the crayons, then use a black marker to add the wrapper bands and outline the details.

    Step 3: Make the chalkboard

    Cut a rectangle from black paper and a slightly larger rectangle from craft paper to make the chalkboard frame. Glue the black rectangle on top.

    Step 4: Create the apple

    Cut an apple from red paper along with a small green leaf and brown stem. Glue the leaf and stem to the top of the apple.

    Step 5: Personalize the chalkboard

    Now it's time to make the wreath your own! Use a white marker or chalk marker to write "First Day of School," your child's name, their grade, the school year, or any fun message you'd like on the chalkboard.

    Step 6: Put it all together

    Glue everything onto the paper plate wreath! We glued our crayons around the wreath, then added the chalkboard and apple near the bottom. But there are so many fun ways to arrange the pieces. Try grouping the crayons together, placing the chalkboard in the center, or decorating however you like. There isn't a wrong way to make it—have fun creating a wreath that's uniquely yours!

Notes

  • Add a ribbon or piece of twine to the top for easy hanging.
  • Make one each year and write the grade on the chalkboard to create a fun collection of back-to-school memories.
  • Hang it on your front door, bedroom door, classroom door, or bulletin board to celebrate the start of a new school year.
