How to Dye Pasta with Easter Egg Dye

Use leftover Easter egg dye to create bright, colorful pasta—perfect for sensory bins, crafts, and hands-on play

Ingredients

  • Dry pasta (any shape works, like bowtie, penne, or rotini..(this pasta variety pack is perfect)
  • Easter egg dye tablets or food coloring
  • Vinegar or Water (if your dye requires it)
  • Bowls (preferably with lids, but not necessary)
  • Wax paper or baking sheet for drying
  • A sensory bin or large container for play

Method

  1. If using leftover Easter egg dye, pour each color into a separate cup or bowl. If making fresh dye, mix ½ cup of warm water with 1 teaspoon of vinegar and the color tablet or food coloring and stir until it is dissolved.
  2. Color the Pasta Place a handful of dry pasta into each bowl of dye, ensuring all pieces are fully submerged. Any pasta that remains above the liquid may not absorb the color. Stir the pasta to make sure it is all covered. Optional: Place lids over each bowl.
  3. Let the Pasta Get Colorful Let the pasta sit and absorb the color. We let ours soak overnight.
  4. Let the Pasta Dry: Once your pasta is bright and colorful, drain the liquid from the bowls and spread the dyed pasta in a single layer on a baking sheet or wax paper. You can reuse the dye to repeat this process. Let it air dry for at least 1–2 hours or until completely dry to the touch, then it's ready to be fun!
  5. Assemble the Sensory Bin: Once dry, place the colored pasta into a large bin or container. Add fun sensory tools like scoops, cups, spoons, or small toys to encourage hands-on play.
  6. Enjoy the Fun! Let kids explore the different colors, textures, and sounds of the pasta as they play, scoop, pour, and sort. Store the pasta in a sealed container for future sensory play or crafts.
