Coffee Filter Gravity Rainbow Art for Kids

Materials

  • Coffee filters (round work best)
  • Washable markers
  • Spray bottle with water
  • White cardstock or construction paper

Instructions

  • 1. Color the Coffee Filter

    Cut the coffee filter in half and color it using rainbow markers. Encourage kids to press firmly so the colors are bold and saturated. The colors will go through the coffee filter so place a piece of scratch paper or activity mats underneath it.

    2. Place and Angle

    Lay the coffee filter at the top of a sheet of white paper. Slightly tilt or angle the paper so gravity can help pull the colors downward.

    3. Spray with Water

    Place a tray underneath to catch the water.

    Lightly spray the colored section with water. Watch as the colors begin to blend, drip, and travel down the page.
    This is the exciting part — kids love seeing gravity in action!
    Optional: You can use a large toothed comb to help guide the water down.
    Allow the paper to dry.

    4. Glue Cotton Ball Clouds

    Once the coffee filter is dry, glue it securely onto the paper. Finish by attaching cotton balls along the top edge to form fluffy clouds floating above the colorful rainbow drips.
