Dot and Build Patterns: Math Activity and Free Printable

We have been playing with unifix cubes and learning patterns which are one of the first basic math skills kids are taught in school. This simple activity is made so children can learn to continue pattern, and then replicate them. If you don’t have unifix cubes you can use other small solid colored objects like glass gems, puff balls, buttons, or whatever else you have.

Dot & Build Patterns Activity

Pin me please! 🙂

Supplies:
Dot & build printable (available to download for free at the end of this post)
Bingo Markers (affiliate link), markers, or crayons
Unifix Cubes (affiliate link) or small place markers

Directions:
1.  Place unifix cubes on the circle in a pattern leaving the last few circles blank.

2.  Have child complete the pattern by placing unifix cubes on the remaining circles.

3.  Have child use markers to recreate the pattern on the row below the unifix cubes. Repeat 1-3.

You could also do the activity again and have the child dot the pattern and then build it with unifix cubes.

When we had filled in all the rows, we connected the unifix cubes together and counted them to practice numbers and one-to-one correspondence.

The printable is fairly blank so you can adapt it to fit your child and their skill level. Different pattern types are: AB,
ABC, AAAB, AABC, ABB, AAB, ABCC, and AABB.

  • We need to encourage kids to play without devices. It engages their minds in finding creative ways to occupy themselves and fight boredom. If they spend time playing with peers and family members, they have the added benefit of social engagement. So, yes, boredom can be good for kids, in a rather roundabout way!
  • We made colorful candy beads with Twizzlers Twists to make a wearable craft that we could eat! I put together a little kit to bring with us in the car because Twizzlers don’t melt (cool right!?!), they are the perfect supply for this craft.
  • We are ready to learn about bees with our Bee Activities and Printables as part of this week’s Creative Preschool theme; Insects. The printables include a fun labeling activity that comes in two levels (reading or color matching), a bee coloring page, description of bee body parts (head, thorax, abdomen…), and a writing activity page.
  • We made an adorable bunch of balloons with cupcake liners. We were talking about layers the other day and this craft was a perfect way to demonstrate our discussion as well as brighten up our walls. There is nothing that the kids need to cut, so this craft is great for all ages and doesn’t take much time.
  • We have been learning about the Ocean which fits perfectly with this month’s Kids Crafts Stars theme–to create a new ocean themed kids craft. I wanted to come up with something simple and beautiful that reminded me of looking at the ocean. We used coffee filters and cut out animal silhouettes like a dolphin, shark, whale, and fish to make colorful suncatchers to hang on our window. I have a free pattern included in this post so you can easily make one too!
  • Today’s toilet paper roll cars craft is a perfect create-and-play craft for my kiddos (and hopefully your kiddos too!) My son always has cars in his hands and my daughter is always looking for transportation for her little dolls–now everyone is ready to roll :).
