Spring Tree Flower Bud Kid Craft with Q-Tips

Have you ever dyed cotton balls before? The color turns out brilliant because cotton is so absorbent and since cotton is on each end of a q-tip this crafty idea is pretty darn brilliant too (if I don’t say so myself). With winter coming to an end one of my favorite things to see at the beginning of spring is small flower buds appearing on the trees–finally some color to the world again! Kids can make their own mixed media spring tree craft with colorful little flower buds to brighten any lingering winter blues.

Q-Tip Painted Spring Tree Kids Craft: a clever way to make a budding spring tree

Supplies:

  • Q-tips-affiliate link
  • Brown Acrylic Paint-affiliate link
  • Paint brush
  • Light blue craft paper
  • White and brown or green craft paper (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Small bowls
  • Food coloring (We used Neon Liquid Food Colors-affiliate link)

Directions:

To prep the activity cut off one end of the q-tips. In small bowls add a little bit of water (approx. 1 T.) and a few drops of food coloring and dip the cotton swabs and paint the q-tip stick brown and set aside to dry. I set ours on paper to dry and a few of the sticks stuck a little bit so you may want to dry them on wax paper. We used 10 q-tips for each tree.

Have child rip white paper for clouds and brown or green paper for the ground and glue it to the white piece of paper.

Have child paint a tree trunk using the brown paint and paint brush and set aside to dry.

Have child glue the q-tips to make the tree branches and the extra q-tip ends as flower buds on their tree.
