Get ready for Christmas by making the cutest looking reindeer using your child’s handprints. You can simply print the template out, make handprints, and assemble the craft. I included two sizes of Rudolph templates so every size hand will work with this craft–you could make a whole family of reindeer to help Santa out this year if you choose. It’s going to be fun!

How to Make this Craft Mess-Free (Paint Free)

If you don’t want to get the paint out you can always trace around your child’s hands instead. The template will still work. Also, if you want to add more child involvement you can print out the black and white Rudolph template that kids can color in like a coloring page with crayons, markers, watercolors, or pencils.

My littlest guy (Little Puppy, age 1) had fun making his handprints. Anytime he gets his hands on paint he has a good time. When I help him make his handprints I gently hold my hand over the top of his to keep it from wiggling and smearing. I also never paint handprints directly on the craft template in case we miss a finger, get too many finger prints, or slide across the page. Instead we make handprints on extra paper and cut them out and glue them to the template. This ensures I can pick out the best looking handprint. After we were done painting I let Little Puppy paint with the extra paint. I added in some green paint too and by the end he started painting himself. It almost looked like the Grinch had come to visit, lol. I was glad I let him paint in his diaper.

My big kids (Little Tiger, age 8 and Little Dragon-not pictured, age 6) have not grown out of making handprint crafts. They still gladly paint their hands and make handprint crafts. I’m so glad they like making them because handprint crafts make perfect cards and gifts for others. Their grandparents always smile and say “awww” when they receive one–definitely a fridge worthy craft.

  • Brown paint (I like using acrylic paint because it is generally thicker and makes a better handprint)
  • Rudolph craft template (Available to download toward the end of this post)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • White paper (I like to use White cardstock-affiliate link for painted crafts because the paper is thicker and brighter white.)
  • Paint brush (For handprint crafts I like to use soft and fluffy tipped paint brush like this one, 3/4 Paint Brush-affiliate link, because they transfer a lot of paint.)

DIRECTIONS:

We created a short video tutorial or you can continue to the directions below.

Download the template towards the end of this post. Print the Rudolph template out on white paper and the Lil’ Reindeer background page out on any colored paper. We choose light blue.

Fill a tray with paint, liberally brush the paint on your child’s hand and make a handprint with their right and left hand. I like to fill a paper up with all right hand handprints and another paper with all left hand handprints then select the best two to use for the craft. My bigger kids (age 6 and 8) made 3 handprints on each paper and my little kid (age 1) made 4 handprints on each paper. Set he handprints to the side to dry.

When the paint is dry, bubble cut around the handprints by leaving a little edge of white.

Glue the handprints onto the Lil’ Reindeer template or choose to use your own background page.

Then glue the Rudolph template on the bottom of the handprints. Now you are done, don’t forget to make a Santa Handprint craft too!
