When Should I Make a Butterfly Craft?

Butterfly crafts are popular for spring and summer crafting with kids or when doing a bug and insect unit at school. If you are a fan of butterflies, you could make this craft anytime or turn it into a Mother’s Day craft! You may also enjoy these free printable butterfly coloring pages too.

Why I Love Making Handprint & Footprint Crafts:

So one of the best parts of doing handprint and footprint crafts is the tickling nature of it. As I was getting ready to share this craft I couldn’t find the pictures of the kids and I couldn’t share this post without them. I searched all my SD cards which are full of thousands of pictures until I finally found them because their smiles say it all—this craft is so fun, as you can see–blurry picture and all.

Now I know some people are nervous about getting paint everywhere, but I have found if you keep a pack of baby wipes in your craft box that activities like this are more manageable. As soon as my kid’s are done making prints they grab a wipe and start wiping up before they make a move through the house.

Directions:

Cover your child’s hand with paint and press it gently onto the white craft paper. I use my hand to cover theirs so it doesn’t wiggle and to make sure all parts of their hand made contact with the paper. Repeat with the other hand and make 2 prints for each hand (4 prints total).

Cover your child’s foot with paint and press it gently onto the white craft paper. Set handprints and footprints aside to dry.

Cut the handprints and footprints out.

Arrange them so they look like butterfly wings with two handprints on each side. Glue them to a colored piece of paper.

Glue the footprint on top of the wings to make the butterfly body. The heal of the footprint should be at the top of the wings to make the butterfly head.

Cut a piece of pipe cleaner off and fold it into a V shape and glue (or tape) to the butterfly.

We added jewels, googly eyes, and Little Tiger used a permanent marker to give her butterfly added details.

I remember my dad telling me that each craft had a good stopping point and sometimes he would think that I crossed it with my creativity by adding too many squiggles and stuff like that. I understand what he was saying but I love watching Little Tiger come up with her own designs and hearing her explain what her imagination has come up with. By giving her a pen and giving her creative freedom she is able to explore her artistic side, and personalize her work. My point is even though this is a handprint and footprint craft stamping craft, you can still find ways to allow kids to enjoy the magic of artistic creativity. When you are all done crafting, enjoy some butterfly coloring pages for extra fun together!
