We have been reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar a lot now that it is spring, so I decided to put together a tasty activity for the kids. Whenever food is involved I never have difficulty keeping their attention :). We explored our sense of taste and baked some fruit pizza (cookies) together that includes the yummy fruits the hungry caterpillar ate.

The kids loved eating all the different types of fruit while we read the book together before making our pizzas. They had fun holding the fruit in their hands, squeezing them to see if juice would come out, smelling them, and of course tasting them all. You could also include more of the food the caterpillar ate like salami (my kids can’t get enough of it), cheese, cupcakes, watermelon… to make this activity a full meal!

Supplies:
Sugar Cookie Dough (I used the pre-made kind from the store, but you could always make your own) Red and green frosting Apple, Pear, Plum, Strawberry, Orange Small circle cookie cutter Small pretzel sticks Directions: 1.  Roll out the cookie dough and use the cookie cutter to make 6 circle cookies for each caterpillar. Bake the cookies and set aside to cool. Meanwhile chop up the fruit into small pieces.
I cut each fruit in half, and cut one half into small pieces for their pizzas and cut the other half into slices for us to eat as we read the book.
2. To decorate the cookies spread red frosting on one cookie. To make the caterpillars face break a pretzel stick in half and put the pieces on the top of the caterpillars head to make the antennas. Use green frosting to make the face.
3. Have child decorate pizzas by spreading the green frosting on their cookie and adding fruit to the top.
I made each cookie using only one type of fruit, but my kids mixed the fruit up and I really like how theirs turned out (and tasted). Leave it to the kids to come up with the best way 🙂
