With only 2 ingredients that come from the kitchen, this sensory play recipe is super easy to put together, great for toddlers and kids of all ages, and goes with tons of themes. We added dinosaurs to our mud play and plan on doing it again with bugs and flowers.

Sensory Play: Taste Safe Mud Recipe

We love taste safe sensory play because I can don’t have to dig out slobbery things from my kiddos little mouths, choking hazards decrease (although it always best to keep a watchful eye), and I don’t have to worry about small amounts of our activity ending up in their mouths. Supplies:
Taste Safe Mud (Recipe provided below)
Toy dinosaurs
Activity tray

Directions:

Set the dinosaurs and a pile of sensory mud on the activity trays and let kids play, create, and imagine.

The squishy mud was perfect for making dinosaur tracts in and Little Tiger (preschooler, age 4) loved building houses and walls with so the dinosaurs were safe and could lay eggs. Little Dragon (toddler, age 2) fed the dinosaurs our sensory mud (since it is taste-safe I didn’t stop him, he even tried some for himself :). For more fun add some some celery or broccoli for trees and mushrooms for rocks.

Ingredients:
One can of chocolate frosting
Approximately 1 1/4 C. flour

Directions:

Update: Raw flour can contain bacteria. To disinfect the flour, microwave your flour in 30 second intervals until it reaches 160 degrees. Then let it cool, and continue with the recipe.

Stir frosting and add flour a little at a time. Knead until it forms a dough. If it is sticky add a little flour until it no longer sticks to your hand. If it is stiff, add a couple of drops of water until it reaches the right consistency.

To keep the mud soft wrap it in plastic wrap and store it in an air-tight container in the fridge or leave it out to dry (it will become crumbly) and store it in a container. Either way, the mud is fun to play with.
