My little toddler is not the careful crafter that my daughter is becoming, so crafts with him need to be simple, fast, with lots of creative freedom. This craft was perfect because it was all of those things, but also could be intricate and structured. My son did a little sprinkle, and a little pat, and his Christmas ornament craft was done. While my daughter placed each sparkle on her ornament carefully to create a pretty pattern. So no matter what the age of your kids, this craft will be perfect!

I like using contact paper because it’s easy for kids to stick things to without making a sticky mess with glue. It also lets light shine through, making the ornament look extra lovely on the Christmas tree.

Supplies:

Paper
Cookie Cutters
Hot glue gun and glue
Scissors
Ribbon/yarn

Directions:

1.  To make the ornament frame, fold paper in half and trace a cookie cutter shape onto it. Next, carefully cut out around the shape, leaving a wide area to frame the ornament. Then cut along the line to make the center of the ornament open.

2.  Cut out contact paper and give to child to decorate with sparkles. I cut out a large rectangle of contact paper and taped it to his board to craft on. I ended up putting paper underneath the contact paper because he had a hard time seeing where to decorate the clear plastic.
At first he placed the sparkles on his ornament…
Then he sprinkled the sparkles on his ornament…
and finally he dumped the sparkles on his ornament and rubbed them around, and he was done. 🙂

3.  Put a second piece of contact paper on the top and rub with finger to make sure the sparkles are secure.

4.  Use the hot glue gun to glue an ornament frame to one side of the contact paper.

5.  Turn the contact paper over and glue the other side of the ornament frame on.

6.  Cut around the frame to cut the ornaments out of the contact paper.

7.   Cut out a piece of ribbon and glue the ends together to form a loop. Glue a loop to the top of each ornament so it can be hung up.

  1. These are lovely! I must get some sparkles myself, since it was a nightmare using glitter glue tubes today! My kid Had to squeeze with all his might and it just frustrated him (& me too- cuz I ended up doing the hard work!)

    1. We have trouble with glitter glue too sometimes because it's so thick it doesn't drip down to the bottom to make it easy to squeeze out. Once they are half empty, I end up helping my daughter a lot too. Hopefully the sparkles work better! 🙂

    1. Hi Susen, thank you! My little guy seemed to enjoy it for the short amount of time it took him to make it 🙂
